Description:

Native American Indian, Columbia Plateau area, probably Nez Perce, possibly Yakama, Cayuse, Palouse, Walla Walla, or Umatilla, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely woven, flat corn husk bag with a brown animal hide strap. One side is decorated with geometric diamond pattern design in red and green hues against the natural ground with an upper red and blue stripe border. The other features an abstract, staggered linear pattern in red, black, blue, and orange hues against a natural ground. Woven cornhusk bags like this one were sought after trade items in the Plateau trade network. As time went on, these bags were created with more brightly colored false embroidery of cornhusk or acrylic yarn. This one, however, is a wonderful early example of a form unique to the Columbia Plateau area. Size: 13.25" L x 12" W (33.7 cm x 30.5 cm)
