Description:

Central Asia, India, Naga, ca. 19th century CE. Carved from a single piece of wood, this stool is sure to make an impression with its four figural legs, each one depicting a person kneeling or sitting in repose with both hands placed upon the knees. Once avid headhunters, the Naga came under the influence of British missions throughout the 19th century. Talented artisans, they have traditionally created furnishings from native resources of the land, this stool being no exception. Size: 21" W x 9" H (53.3 cm x 22.9 cm)

The Naga are a fascinating group of approximately seventeen distinct tribal groups who live in northeastern India and north-western Myanmar. They have a long-standing reputation as fierce warriors and were known to collect heads from enemies as late as 1969.
