Description:

South Asia, Northwestern India, Mughal Empire, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A beautiful pair of portraits depicting the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal for whom the Taj Mahal was built, in opaque watercolors and gilt. Each is depicted on an oval paper under an integral glass glazing, facing inward towards each other, set against a pale blue background. The portraits are sensitively done, soft features with an adoring expression on the emperor's face as he gazes upon his beloved wife; her hands painted with henna. Their garments are lavish and intricate with numerous pearls and jewelry accenting the vibrant cloth. Size (each portrait): 3.75" L x 2.75" W (9.5 cm x 7 cm); (frame): 13" L x 9.5" W (33 cm x 24.1 cm)
