Description:

South Asia, Northern India, Mughal culture, ca. 19th century CE. A stunning nephrite jade Holdali pendant, the obverse face is inlaid with quartz stones and high quality gold embellishments. The gold used in elegant Mughal jewelry is generally of the highest of carats - here, the gold is a 96.86% (equivalent to 23K+)! The nephrite is shaped like a tulip or arabesque flourish - pointing to the Islamic influence of the Mughal empire. The semi-transparent quartz stone at the center is cut into a 6-point star or flower, framed by poured gold with curvilinear strokes leading outwards to the other 3 quartz cabochons. The process to shape jade was especially time consuming and difficult due to the hard nature of the stone, an elite member of society undoubtably cherished this pendant. A silver wire is threaded through the drilled suspension hole in the jade and strung on a modern cord with a lobster clasp as a wearable necklace. Size of pendant : 1.3" L x 1.25" W (3.3 cm x 3.2 cm); cord: 21" L (53.3 cm); gold quality: 96.86% (equivalent to 23K+); weight: 8.8 grams
