North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, Islamic culture, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A marvelous pottery bowl known as a mokhfia presenting a ring-form foot and thick walls that swell outwards to a broad, flared rim, all adorned in vibrant hues of cobalt, turquoise, and lemon yellow atop a white-glazed ground. Elaborately hand-glazed, the elegant dish boasts a complex decorative program on the interior of a quatrefoil on the central basin surrounded by 10 square motifs that cover the walls, all filled with ovoid, lattice, and polka-dot patterns. A checkered pattern embellishes the top of the circular rim. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Size: 13.9" Diameter x 4" H (35.3 cm x 10.2 cm)
