Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A splendid pottery bowl presetting a hemispherical body with thick walls that gently curve inwards to a broad rim, all sitting upon a pedestal, ring-shaped base. Boasting lovely blue on white decoration, the interior of the graceful dish is skillfully, hand-painted with complex spiral, geometric, lattice, and floral designs. Alternatively, the exterior is mostly bare with a horizontal zigzag striation encircling the wall and a lustrous white glaze with beautiful areas of craquelure. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Note how the foot of this example is strung with a modern metal wire allowing it to be easily suspended for show. Additionally, the base of the vessel is inscribed with the word "Fez" in Arabic, indicating where it was constructed. Size: 11.6" Diameter x 4.9" H (29.5 cm x 12.4 cm)
