North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a lovely wheel thrown pottery serving vessel known as a mokhfia with a ring foot, shallow basin, and hand-painted with colorful geometric and abstract foliate motifs. The thick walls swell out to a broad rim decorated with a teal band and a cobalt blue stippled and brown linear motifs. The broad, but shallow dish is slipped in an ivory white glaze then covered with 8-pointed star motifs in saffron yellow, teal, maroon-pink, and black - all surrounded by thick cobalt speckling. These patterns are a cultural mix of Islamic and Nomadic Berber and are presented as the main focal point of the bowl - in fact mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. - Condition: Chips and nicks to ring base and rim. Surface abrasions, firing and glazing imperfections, otherwise intact. Old inventory label on the base and label residue on the rim. Nice craquelure throughout. Some staining and discoloration.
