Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting a rounded bottom and thick walls that rise to a flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form foot. Adorned in hues of cobalt, powder blue, lemon yellow, seafoam green, and black atop a white glaze ground, the elegant dish is skillfully hand-painted to feature a central tondo of a flower inside of an 8-pointed star, all surrounded by polka dot and vegetal motifs. The swooping walls are decorated with dashed and linear striations arranged in a starburst design, while a pattern of "S" shapes lines the rim. Alternatively, the exterior is enveloped in a lustrous cream-hued glaze with a lovely natural craquelure. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. A modern metal wire and fiber rope are tied to the foot of this example, allowing it to be more easily suspended. Size: 15.2" Diameter x 4.2" H (38.6 cm x 10.7 cm)
