North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting a rounded bottom and thick walls that rise to a flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form foot. Adorned in hues of cobalt, lemon yellow, emerald, and black atop a white glaze ground, the elegant dish is skillfully hand-painted to feature a convex hexagon at the center surrounded by 6 large circular designs, all filled with abstract vegetal, linear, and maze-like motifs. Phytomorphic decoration additionally embellishes the rim, while the exterior is coated in a lustrous glaze of creamy white with a lovely craquelure to some areas. Mokhfias are used for serving couscous and are pierced through the foot for displaying on a wall when not in use. Size: 15.9" Diameter x 4" H (40.4 cm x 10.2 cm)

- Condition: Expected nicks, chips, pitting, and abrasions. Funning and fading to glaze with some softening of painted details. Otherwise, intact and excellent with nice craquelure to glaze. Modern metal wire on base for suspension.
