Description:

Native American, Northern California/Oregon, Modoc People, ca. 19th century CE. A yew wood bow painted with organic pigment. The form is distinctive, with a symmetrical wide body, tapered ends, and a narrowed center for a grip. The surface is painted with an interlocking geometric motif of triangles and wavy lines. This bow would have been used with obsidian arrows, easily obtained from Glass Mountain (near Yosemite). Prior to European contact and for a few decades after it, the Modoc lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle, traveling from Goose Lake on the modern Oregon/California border to Mount Shasta in the summer to hunt deer, antelope, and mountain sheep. Size: 3.75" W x 36.25" H (9.5 cm x 92.1 cm); 38.5" H (97.8 cm) on included custom stand.
