Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 19th century CE. An antique wooden santo figure, hand carved and painted in a rich chocolate brown hue, depicting a Christian saint dressed in voluminous brown robes, upon a separately carved base. Both of his removable hands are missing, an unfortunate fate all too common for older Santos. Given his hairstyle, it is possible that this Santo represents Saint Francis of Assisi, one of the most popular saints in the Catholic canon, known for his love of animals and nature and his miraculous acts. A wonderful work of Mexican religious art. Size: 5" W x 10.75" H (12.7 cm x 27.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Collection of Deacon K. Giacone
