Description:

New World, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved, wooden lamb figure, most likely from a creche, or possibly made to sit at the feet of a large santo figure. The figure is finely carved, with detailed, long, curly wool; its legs and hooves tucked under its body, and wide eyes in a downturned face whose position suggests devotion. The lamb is one of the oldest and most enduring symbols of the Christian faith, with Roman frescoes from the first century CE depicting Christ as the Good Shepherd carrying a lamb on his shoulders. Size: 5.75" L x 9.25" W x 6.25" H (14.6 cm x 23.5 cm x 15.9 cm)

Over time, the lamb evolved to be a symbol for Christ himself, the Lamb of God. The seated lamb, however, almost certainly comes from a scene relating to the Christmas story, when Mary gave birth surrounded by farm animals, who sat to worship the newly born Christ.

Santos played an important role in bringing the Catholic Church to the New World with the Spanish colonists. These religious figures were hand-carved and used as icons to explain the major figures - Mary, Christ, and the saints - to new, indigenous converts. Likewise, they served as a connection to the Old World for Spanish colonists far from home. They became a folk art tradition in the Spanish New World, from modern day Guatemala to as far north as New Mexico and Colorado. Many of them were lovingly cared for over the years, with repairs and paint added as they aged, and played an active part for a long time in the religious life of their communities.
