Description:

Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A superb retablo depicting El Nino Cautivo (Captive Child) - a very rare subject in retablo art. The artist who painted this retablo depicted the Captive Child in the traditional manner - standing upon a raised pedestal, dressed in an elaborate costume, holding shackles in his right hand, and presenting the two fingers of his right hand pointing up toward god and the celestial realm. Worshippers customarily petition the Captive Child to seek protection from financial woes, alcoholism, and addiction. In addition to featuring this sacred iconography, the retablo is finely painted in a colorful jewel-tone palette and embellished with gold leaf on heavy gauge tin - and all is set in a beautiful glass-fronted nicho containing shimmering floral-patterned foil that is further embellished with swathes of golden and scarlet red pigment. Size of retablo: 10" W x 13.125" H (25.4 cm x 33.3 cm); of nicho: 13" W x 16" H (33 cm x 40.6 cm)
