Description:

Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A finely painted retablo on heavy gauge tin depicting the crowned Saint Joseph (San Jose) tenderly cradling the infant Jesus, while supporting a beautiful blooming staff, his characteristic attribute, in the crook of his right elbow. The heads of both the infant Jesus and Joseph are endearingly close, united by glowing golden highlights. The baby Jesus holds a cross in his right hand, representing his Christian dominion, and a small blooming flower in his left. Both are dressed in flowing vestments, Joseph in his traditional red and green, the Christ Child in near transparent, gossamer-like drapery. The artist of this retablo clearly had a command over his technique; we see skillful modeling of visages and hands as well as a wonderful range of textures from billowy fabrics to soft supple skin. A fine retablo replete with rich symbolism and remarkable artistry and technique! Size: 14" L x 10" W (35.6 cm x 25.4 cm)
