Description:

Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely tin nicho containing a retablo of San Juan Nepomuceno, or Saint John Nepomuk, surrounded by a starburst-surmounted frame. Draped in an ermine cape over a cassock, San Juan is depicted with his traditional iconography wearing a biretta encircled by a star-adorned halo and holding a martyr's palm in one hand and a crucifix in the other. St. John Nepomuk was the patron saint of Bohemia, as well as of confession, due to the legend of his role as confessor to King Wenceslaus. When the king demanded that St. John reveal his wife's confessions, the saint refused. After torture by rack and fire, John was bound and thrown into the river Moldau, where he was found with 5 stars circling his body. Size of retablo: 7" W x 10" H (17.8 cm x 25.4 cm); of nicho: 9" W x 15.5" H (22.9 cm x 39.4 cm)

San Juan Nepomuceno's image was widely circulated by Jesuits throughout the Spanish empire in the 18th century. The Church promoted devotion to this saint since it encouraged Catholics to confess their sins in the presence of a priest, a ritual known as the Sacrament of Penance.
