Description:

Latin America, Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. A wonderful tin retablo painted with a scene of a prisoner blindfolded and tied to a chair as an angel kneels at his feet. This image may portray Senor del Aposentillo (or Cristo en el aposentillo), the moment when Christ was imprisoned in the home of Caiaphas and angels who were helping him in his Passion came to worship him, or Acts 12 of the Bible when Saint Peter was liberated from Herod's prison by an angel. The barred window of his prison can be seen to the left, perhaps taking influence from Raphael's "Deliverance of Saint Peter" in the Papal Apartments of the Vatican. Size: 10" W x 13.75" H (25.4 cm x 34.9 cm)

Provenance: private Oglesby, Illinois, USA collection, acquired in the 1990s from various Western US auction galleries
