Description:

Mexico, ca. 19th Century CE. An interesting antique Mexican retablo depicting the Veil of Veronica, a popular retablo subject. Veronica was a woman who, moved to compassion by the tortured Christ, offered her veil to wipe the blood from his face. The veil retained the image of the Holy Face, and is a famous relic of the Passion. Here the veil is shown in fine detail, the image of a mournful Christ prominently displayed, his tears mixing with blood as they roll down his face and beard. A thick crown of thorns rests atop his bloody head. 7" x 5" Provenance: ex-Ramone Kelly private collection, prominent Denver visual artist. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
