Description:

Mexico, 19th c. A poignant framed retablo beautifully painted on tin with the traditional depiction of San Francisco, the saint associated with charity. Note the word "Caritas" or "Caridad is painted at the top of the composition, the last few letters covered by the delicate wooden frame. St. Francis's attributes also include a lamb emerging from flames (shown here at the bottom left) perhaps referring to his immunity to fire, the most daunting of the elements. Hence, St. Francis is believed to protect worshippers from fire and by extension life-threatening plagues. St. Francis, the founder of the Minim Friars, was known for the miracles he performed. The artist of this retablo depicted him in his dark brown habit ornamented with golden stars and trim suggestive of his miraculous powers. His visage boasts his signature beard and is covered by a hood. He holds a rosary in his right hand and a shepherd's staff with a curved end is cradled in his left hand. 9-3/4"L x 6-3/4"W
