Description:

A sweet antique Mexican retablo depicting St. Anthony of Padua holding the Christ Child. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. This retablo depicts the popular image of Anthony of Padua holding the Baby Jesus. The tradition of this image stems from the story of Count Tiso of Padua, who witnessed St. Anthony communing with Jesus in child form while praying in his home. Here, Anthony is shown in the blue robes that were commonly adopted by Spanish Franciscans of the time as a symbol of their devotion to the Virgin Mother. In his left hand, Anthony holds the Christ, balanced atop a book. In his right hand is a rod of lilies. Anthony and the Child smile softly, while in the lower right corner a worshiper (probably meant to be Count Tiso) kneels. 12" x 9 ¾"
Provenance: ex-Kelley collection, Colorado.
