Description:

Mexico, ca. 1800 CE. An antique painting on tin depicting the Holy Mother as Our Lady of Good Success. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. This retablo depicts the Virgin Mary as an image of beneficence, standing atop a pillar which, combined with her skirt, resembles a chalice. On either side of her are two candles, set in golden holders. Her robes are lavish and colorful, with roses and gold detailing. Atop her head is an elaborate golden crown, over which gleams a halo of stars. 13" x 9-1/2"

  • Condition: Areas of loss, warping, and rust, as is typical with antique tin. Small holes in top and bottom for suspension.
