Description:

Mexico, ca. 1880 CE. This is a beautiful example of a retablo showing the Virgin holding sacramentals and the Christ child. Christ holds the orb and cross and wears a bright red robe; his mother wears a brown dress with a blue-lined ermine robe and a red crown. Below the pair are two individuals, a man and a woman, who appear to be trapped in the fires of Hell, although their facial expressions don't make it seem very terrible. This retablo is most likely representing Nuestros Senora de Carmen, who appears as a protectoress. The colors on this particular retablo are brilliant and bright, especially the blues. Size: 9.9" W x 13.35" H (25.1 cm x 33.9 cm).
