Description:

Latin America, Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful tin retablo of Nuestra Senora de Belen or Our Lady of Bethlehem depicted in a manner based on Raphael's "Sistine Madonna." Draped in a mantle, the Madonna lovingly holds the Christ child to her chest, her cheek just barely grazing his forehead as they both gaze forward. An ovoid border surrounds the pair, adorned with decorative foliage in gold pigment and set against a navy blue ground. The periphery of the tin is embellished by an additional gold-colored foliate border intended to mimic a picture frame. Size: 6.6" W x 10" H (16.8 cm x 25.4 cm)
