Description:

Mexico, 19th c. Antique tin retablo with rendering of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost - the Holy Trinity. The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. In retablo art La Trinidad appear as three images of the same person. This was done despite Pope Benedict XIV's ban of 1745 on depicting the Trinity as three identical personages. This custom originated in Byzantine art; however, representing the Holy Ghost as a human had been previously condemned in 1623 by Pope Urban VIII. A nice example, quite poignant! Size: 9-1/2" x 7" (24.1 x 17.8 cm)
