Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial period, 19th century CE. One of the most desirable of all of the retablos from this fascinating religious art form, this subject of this piece is called La Preciosa Sangre de Cristo, or Eucharistic Man of Sorrow and represents the Precious Blood of Christ. This retablo depicts the religious symbolism of the fruit of the vine turning into wine and new wine into the blood of Christ which flows from the stigmata in his hands. The blood flows into a chalice and then flows into a well where six white lambs drink. These six lambs represent the seven holy sacraments, and it is actually quite rare that only 6 lambs are shown. Set in an old wooden frame that probably also dates to 19th century. Size of painting: 9.7" W x 13.8" H (24.6 cm x 35.1 cm); of frame: 12.25" W x 16" H (31.1 cm x 40.6 cm)
