Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. early 20th century CE. An Alegoria de la Redencion, oil on tin retablo. A relatively unusual retablo subject, the iconography is quite rich, replete with allegorical imagery and layered symbolism. In this particular example, Christ on the Cross is accompanied by the sun and the moon among other traditional symbolic icons; la Mater Dolorosa mourns him beneath, the archangel Michael is depicted beneath her. At the base we have Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with a death scene ironically placed opposite the Tree of Life. Occupying the lowest register and surrounding the lower end of the scene are a dozen animas solas. Fittingly, the Eternal Father resides above the entire scene. Size: 12-3/8" x 8-1/4". Provenance: Ex-Historia Antiques, Santa Monica, CA All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #109222

  • Condition: Some surface wear and paint loss as shown. Two pinhole size perforations at top end.
