Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely painted "La Anima Sola" (Lone Soul or Lonely Spirit) themed oil on heavy gauge tin retablo, a dramatic depiction that represents a soul in purgatory in a style influenced by the great tradition of tenebroso (tenebrism) employing pronounced chiaroscuro with extreme contrasts of lights and darks to imbue the composition with strong emotional content rivaling that of live theater. The Anima Sola, for those unfamiliar, is a departed ancestral soul awaiting judgement in the flames of purgatory. The Anima Sola (Lonely Soul) may be invoked when a family member or loved one dies in sin or conversely, to send an enemy to a state of temporary suffering or misery in purgatory. Size: 6-1/4" x 4-1/2" (15.9 x 11.4 cm)
