Description:

FIRST TIME AT AUCTION!

Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 19th century CE. A rare painted wooden retablo depicting a souls in purgatory scene, the composition divided into two sections. Above is a Latin cross surrounded by radiating golden rays and floating within billowing clouds. Beneath are two souls who are dramatically shackled and surrounded by flames signifying purgatory. The piece may reference the Archangel Michael who though not depicted assumed the role of soul weigher. Note the burn marks and losses at the lower end are signs that this piece was used during prayer. Size: 9.25" L x 6.125" W (23.5 cm x 15.6 cm)
