Description:

North America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A striking forged iron and silver horse's bridle comprised of several chains and cheek plates in the form of twisting rattlesnakes! Two snakes are arranged to form loops for attaching the throat latch chains, and two larger snakes form the cheek pieces. A thick bit extends across and connects at the center of cheek pieces. The "v" shape that is bent into the center of the bit was used to apply pressure in the mouth for guiding the horse. Finally, the two smallest snakes form the front slobber bar with two integral loops to secure the chains for the reins. The snakes are inlaid with 98% silver to form the diamond patterns along their backs and rattles on the tips of their tails. A remarkable piece of riding tackle! Size of bridle: 8" L x 5.75" W (20.3 cm x 14.6 cm); chain length: 15" L (38.1 cm); quality of silver: 98%
