Description:

North America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A fine example of a cast-iron signal cannon (also known as a salute cannon) with a thick, elongated body, an astragal along the back, a circular fuse hole, a narrow muzzle, and two swivel rods secured within a single bracket atop a bulky wooden cart. A pair of discoid iron wheels enables the cannon to be moved, and a petite loop on the verso makes it easily maneuverable. The stippled letters "JI" are presented atop the barrel with the bracket blocking the remaining text. Size (w/ cart): 13.75" L x 6.5" W x 6.875" H (34.9 cm x 16.5 cm x 17.5 cm); length of barrel: 10.3" L (26.2 cm)
