Description:

North America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A forged iron horse's ring bit comprised of several chains and scrolling cheek plates. The large ring goes around the horse's lower jaw, and the smaller ring goes to the sides attached to the reins. The smaller chains are lip straps that fit under the jaw. The bit has four copper roller pieces attached to the center that spin freely, a popular design for a horse to run its tongue over which has a calming effect. This type of bit is an aggressive piece of tack for controlling horses, especially unruly stallions. These types of riding bits were originally an Islamic design that became popular in Spain and was brought to central America with the Spanish conquistadors. Size of bit area: 6.25" L x 4" W (15.9 cm x 10.2 cm) length with chain: 15.75" L (40 cm)
