Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. An incredibly striking carved wood rendering of the head of Christ on a veil. His head is shown disembodied, with careful detailing of the hair and glass inlaid eyes; blood drips from myriad cuts, especially around his hairline, on his cheek, and from his neck. This Veronica's Veil image is housed in a wooden drawer. A poignant example of religious art executed with a great deal of skill, by someone who obviously possessed a sophisticated talent for both carving and painting. Size: 3.5" deep x 7.125" W x 8.25" H (8.9 cm x 18.1 cm x 21 cm)
The story of Veronica's Veil (also known as the Sudarium) comes from Saint Veronica's encounter with Jesus on the Via Dolorosa. She used her veil to wipe the blood and sweat from his face and his image was imprinted onto the cloth. This story gained popularity in the Middle Ages and continues to be an important part of the story of Christ's final hours in the Catholic tradition.
