Description:

Mexico, 19th century CE. Wonderful and of a rare size Mexican nicho and retablo. The retablo painted on tin depicts San Jeronimo shown as a hermit (after a serious illness he withdrew to the wilderness for a period of 4 years). He is credited with the first complete translation of The Bible from Hebrew into Latin. His retablos always show him accompanied by the Lion of Saint Gerasimus with open, bleeding wounds from self-flagellation and a skull somewhere in the background. The original nicho was created out of hand-snipped tin with raised glass sides and glass door. Size of nicho: 7.5" W x 10.75" H (19 cm x 27.3 cm)
