Description:

Oceania, New Zealand, Maori culture, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful walking staff of a tall and slender form, hand-carved from a singular piece of caramel-hued hardwood. The conical cane has a tapered lower tip, a stocky body and shoulder, and a bulbous handle. Decorating every inch of the body are dozens of incised striations that form a ground upon which three abstract deity figures are presented in low relief. Each standing deity figure has elongated eyes surrounded by stippling, diamond-shaped noses, gaping mouths, and protruding tongues, all beneath attenuated arms and legs. Fine patina covers the entire cane and makes for an attractive presentation. Size: 1.7" W x 38" H (4.3 cm x 96.5 cm); 39.4" H (100.1 cm) on included custom stand.
