Description:

Oceania, New Zealand, Maori, ca. 19th century CE. A striking Maori pekapeka (bat) pendant carved from Inanga jade of characteristically pale milky hues. The pendant hangs from a hand-wrought sterling silver chain. Size: pendant measures 2-3/4" x 1-5/8"; chain measures 24"L.

The name Inanga derives from translucent, white coloring of the Inanga fish of New Zealand. The stone possesses pearly white or grey-green hues as you see in this example and ranges from translucent to opaque. The Maori were quite poetic and named stones (pounamu) after native fish, birds, and plants. Provenance: Ex-private A. Kowsky collection, acquired in early 1970's. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
