Description:

Southeast Asia, Laos, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A stunning and large bowl made from a high quality 98% to 99% silver that features fine repousse work and the 12 animals of the zodiac. The piece rests on a flat base, the steep walls rising upward with high relief hammered motifs across the exterior, including repeating registers of stylized jasmine buds, nodules, and fine beading. The register of panels on the upper midsection each include an animal from the Chinese zodiac: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig - a few animals are a bit more stylized or simplified from their usual form. While the exterior is intricate and opulent, the base also includes a detailed engraved medallion of the three headed elephant Erawan (Airavata), under a parasol within a circular border with radiating petaloid shapes. Size: 9.25" Diameter x 4.5" H (23.5 cm x 11.4 cm); silver quality: 98% to 99%; weight: 497.7 grams
