Description:

East Asia, Korea, late Joseon Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A charming porcelain water dropper in the form of an abstract turtle, with a ring-shaped foot, a discoid body, and four nubbins projecting from the body like feet. A tiny spout rises from one side like a neck and head. The entirety of the surface aside from the foot is coated in a thick, pale grey-blue glaze. Scholars during the Joseon Dynasty used water droppers to wet inkstones to grind ink sticks, using the water to make the ink flow more readily. In the 19th century, fancifully shaped water droppers like these became fashionable. Size: 4.7" W x 2.1" H (11.9 cm x 5.3 cm)
