Description:

East Asia, Korea, Joseon Dynasty (also known as the House of Yi), ca. 19th century CE. A pair of beautiful porcelain vessels. First, a pretty blue-on-white porcelain water dropper, cuboid in form, with delicate floral motifs painted on each of the four sides, a miniature spout jutting out from its upper front, and a peaceful scene of clouds on its upper side. The vessel stands on four diminutive feet. Scholars during the Joseon Dynasty used water stoppers to wet inkstones to grind ink sticks, using the water to make the ink flow more readily. In the 19th century, fancifully shaped water droppers like these became fashionable. Also, a cylindrical jar with a shallow disc foot and wide mouth with thick rim. This is decorated with floral motifs around its upper shoulder. One side has been repaired via the technique known as kintsugi, the "art of precious scars", using lacquer mixed with gold. Size: 2.9" W x 3.7" H (7.4 cm x 9.4 cm)

Provenance: Estate of William Stockton, Colorado, USA; acquired between July 20, 1966 and January 7, 1974 while Mr. Stockton was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. During this period he traveled primarily to Korea, but also to Japan, Vietnam, and other countries in Southeast Asia.
