Description:

East Asia, Korea, Joseon Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A pretty, painted blue-on-white porcelain water dropper, cuboid in form, with delicate symbols representing the letter "S" in Korean painted on each of the four sides, a miniature spout jutting out from one side, and a whimsical scene of a ship sailing on a wide river with rounded mountains surrounding it. The vessel stands on four diminutive feet. Scholars during the Joseon Dynasty used water stoppers to wet inkstones to grind ink sticks, using the water to make the ink flow more readily. In the 19th century, fancifully shaped water droppers like these became fashionable. Size: 3.1" W x 1.95" H (7.9 cm x 5 cm)
