Description:

Southeast Asia, Borneo, Kenyah Dayak, ca. late 19th / early 20th century CE. An engaging hampatong wooden ancestor figure created by an accomplished craftsman of the Dayak in Borneo. The standing figure is frontally facing with both arms held across the abdominal area, as is characteristic of many hampatong figures. On the back, he/she is carrying a more diminuitive figure, perhaps an infant or perhaps a symbolic child representing descendants as this is an ancestral figure. An impressive example boasting fine technique, a wonderful abstract form, and numerous layers of meaning. Size: 9"H x 2"W + custom stand.

This is a Medical Charm Figure given by a Shaman to the Warrior. When a person is sick he will cut little chips from the Charm Figure and eat them in order to heal himself. As one can see from the old Patina on the cuts they have been done many Years ago, meaning that the patient was healed.
