East Asia, Japan, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A carved Japanese wood figure depicting a guardian/warrior entity with Samurai-like qualities wearing an expressive mythical mask, heavy armor, and a helmet adorned with a bird of prey standing on a rocky outcrop. The avian references may refer to the Bird of Life or Karura, a mythical bird-man that orginated in Hinduism and was later adopted into the Buddhist pantheon as a protector deity. Remains of original surface pigment and gilding. Size: 26.5" H (67.3 cm)
