East Asia, Japan, ca. mid 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine, rare example of a formal kanmuri, a Shinto priest's headgear made of lacquered wood covered in mesh. This type of headdress was originally made for the nobility in the Heian era (late 8th to 12th century CE), but now is reserved for priests celebrating the Taisai and Chusai ceremonies or meeting high ranking dignitaries. Size: 6.5" W x 7.9" H (16.5 cm x 20.1 cm)

  • Condition: Small areas of loss on one side of interior, exposing the wood underneath the lacquer. A decorative element once slotted into the opening on the back, but is now lost. Otherwise in fine condition with light deposits on surface and wear commensurate with age.
