Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. 19th century CE. A simple utility knife, or tanto, featuring a forged-steel, single-edged blade housed in a wooden hilt. A slender copper blade cap covers the top of the blade's tang, ensuring a secure fit inside the hand-carved wood handle, which is wrapped with leather cord for grip. The wooden sheath was coated in a red cinnabar lacquer and black lacquer layered on top, fitted with a cord, and includes 2 exterior grooves for storing additional kogatana knives or a tool known as a kogai. Size in sheath: 15" L x 1.5" W (38.1 cm x 3.8 cm); blade only: 10.5" L x 1" W (26.7 cm x 2.5 cm).

    Condition:
  • Abrasions and chips to the wood sheath. Some wear to leather grip, and nicks to blade, but otherwise intact. No maker marks, and handle is not easily removable to check the blade's tang.
