East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. 1880. A 19th century Japanese two-panel folding screen presenting a landscape painting featuring a blossoming weeping cherry tree beside a flowing stream accompanied by lilies, elegant grasses, and a variety of flowering foliage - all rendered in mineral pigments on oxidized silver leaf with a deep red lacquer trim and decorative brass hardware. All is beautifully rendered in a pleasing color palette - shades of vermilion, sage green, cool blue, and white against an oxidized silver leaf background. The cherry blossom theme represents fleeting beauty as well as a change of the seasons, and the composition presents a dramatic bird's-eye view that became popular among Ukiyo-e artists of the earlier Edo period. Size (closed): 72" W x 29.75" H (182.9 cm x 75.6 cm)

Please note: The painting has been tested via x-ray florescence. Mineral pigments are consistent with the period, and silver leaf contains traces of silver.

An old NAGA Antiques (New York) label on verso of one panel dates the screen circa 1880, identifies it as "Weeping Cherry by a Stream, w/ Irises and Spring Flowers, Mineral Pigments on Oxidized Silver Background" and provides measurements.
