Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Edo to Meiji period, ca. third quarter of 19th century to first quarter of 20th century CE. An enthralling paper book with hundreds of columns of Japanese text as well as dozens of highly detailed and macabre illustrations depicting Jigoku, the Japanese Buddhism realm most westerners recognize as Hell. The thin pages are bound inside a pair of slightly thicker covers with pale blue colors and large black kanji characters, and the imagery showcases scenes of horror, dismemberment, exsanguination, mutilation, torture, utter despair, and feasting upon human flesh by nightmarish demons. A true collectors item for any afficionado of the darker side of hand-drawn artistry! Size: 7" W x 9.85" H (17.8 cm x 25 cm)
