Description:

East Asia, Japan, Tokugawa / Edo period, ca. 19th century CE. A finely carved wooden mask depicting the protagonist from the Noh musical play entitled Sansho. This character is a hermit who is persuaded to drink sake in the play. Here we see an expressive perhaps giddy visage, replete with a toothy grin, squinty openwork eyes, wrinkles (laugh lines) on the forehead, temples, nose, and corners of the mouth. A wonderful example from the Japanese Noh classical performance tradition which originated in the 14th century and is still followed today. Custom stand. Size: 8.625" L x 6.125" W (21.9 cm x 15.6 cm); 12.125" H (30.8 cm) on stand
