Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. 1868 to 1912 CE. An absolutely gorgeous, wonderfully preserved lacquered wood sutra box - also known as a "kyobako" - made to hold Buddhist sutras (texts). The box features a fitted lid that can be opened to reveal an interior space perfectly sized for holding written works; the lower body stands on four diminutive feet that wrap around the corners. The interior is fully gilded, while the exterior is decorated with hiramaki-e, a style of flat image. The center of the lid features a large, circular mon, or shield, as well as repeated chrysanthemums in diamond-shaped tiles. Size: 12.25" W x 2.65" H (31.1 cm x 6.7 cm)
