Description:

**Originally Listed At $800**

East Asia, Japan, Meiji to Showa era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A haunting wooden mask hand-carved for Noh theater to depict the face of a Shikami, a violently malicious spirit or monster. Every muscle in the face appears to be tightening toward the center of the mask to form a terrible and angry expression with knitted brows and fierce fangs. Shikami was originally a compound of shishi and kami, which mean "lion" and "bite," respectively. Thus the mask represents the look of a lion biting something. Size: 6.6" W x 8.6" H (16.8 cm x 21.8 cm)
