Description:

East Asia, Japan, Late Edo to Meiji era, ca. 19th century CE. A paper redlight district guidebook known as the Yoshiwara Saiken ("Guidebook for Visitors to Yoshiwara") containing approximately 80 pages bound in the fukuro-toji style, where folded sheets of paper are bound along the spine, creating double-leaved pages. The fourth and fifth pages feature an illustration of the entrance to Yoshiwara, while the blue cover shimmers due to powdered mica mixed into the pigment. Established in the early 17th century as a licensed area for prostitution, the Yoshiwara district in Edo (now Tokyo) became a prominent center for entertainment, with numerous brothels, teahouses, and theaters spread across a large area, making a guidebook essential for new visitors. The Yoshiwara Saiken publication began in the 1700s, appearing biannually until the 1880s. The guide provides detailed information, including names associated with various brothels, fees, lists of teahouses, inns, geisha, and annual festival dates. Size: 6.5" L x 4.6" W (16.5 cm x 11.7 cm
