Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Edo Period, ca. early 19th century CE. A lovely forged-iron maru gata tsuba, a disc-shaped hand guard traditionally employed on Japanese swords. The obverse side of the tsuba displays a pair of butterflies in flight above the wavy ground, and a trio of chrysanthemum flowers adorn the lower half with one in full bloom. The verso, while mostly unadorned, displays a single chrysanthemum bulb. The butterflies and some flowers on the obverse are decorated with thin layers of 60% gilding (equivalent to 14K+ gold) that elegantly complements the layers of brown and russet patina. A fabulous example of Edo Period artistry! Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 2.6" W x 2.625" H (6.6 cm x 6.7 cm); quality of gilding: 60% (equivalent to 14K+).
