Description:

**First Time At Auction**

East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A wood netsuke carving of a skinny dog or wolf devouring a snake. The dog's ribs and spine are protruding and the bony shoulders are prominent, while the glass eyes create a eerie, haunted look. In Japanese lore, wild dogs or wolves known as Okuri-inu or Yama-inu, were supernatural spirits or yokai, that were both malevolent and benevolent forces. The Okuri-inu will stalk travelers along mountain roads, waiting for them to stumble, but if thanked or treated with respect the wolf spirits will leave in peace or may even protect the traveler from other animals or spirits.
